Through the union catalog’s single window, you can search using the explore-and-search engine and be connected to the primary information database of each large archiving organization in the nation, giving you access to more in-depth and richer resources. The different viewpoints afforded by specifying academic fields and time periods, etc. can also be used to explore the digital holdings.
A collective system.
The Digital Archives Union Catalog utilizes Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) technology and Extensible Markup Language (XML) structure. The technological theory is that the server system will periodically gather data from each information database or each information database will periodically provide the server system with the holding’s metadata to establish a combined union catalog. The digital items are not stored in the server system, but stored with each archiving unit. The user will, according to the search results, be linked to the original archiving organization’s system.
